Plans for the 4th?

Postby Wyomom on Sat Jul 03, 2010 10:08 am

We are going camping and then bbq/shoot off fireworks out at the family ranch. We always get a lot of fireworks because DH's dad really enjoys them and we know he looks forward to seeing them every year. The town puts on a show but there is something about having your own display. It's our little tradition, will be for years to come. We are hoping to not get rained on, but the forecast says t-storms all weekend.

I like hearing about other family traditions, that's why I always ask about what others do for the holidays. Family is first and foremost for us, so we always try to get everybody together and have some fun. Doesn't always work out, but our kids always know what will be happening with us.

Anything special you do for the 4th? Have a fun weekend and please ride safe if you're going anywhere!

Son's birthday is the 5th so will do a BBQ for him. The 4th I will be sticking close to home. I have a dog that is terrified of thunder and fireworks. Also dogsitting son's dogs (Siberian Huskies) while he visits friends. I plan to get out for a short ride on Angel, but will stick close to home. We live in a tourist area and the people are crazy out there over a holiday weekend!!!! :o Had a lady turn from a left hand lane in front of me and stop for a yard sale yesterday. OMG!! What is wrong with people!?! Whatever you all are doing, keep it safe!

We are planning a short ride in the morning before it gets too hot, hide from the sun in the afternoon, grill out for dinner, and go down the road and climb a bluff to see the fireworks from the next town to the southwest. We should be getting a bird's eye view!

Church this morning, rode in...love riding to church. Then around 5ish will have a family gathering to grill hotdogs and enjoy some watermelon. Then at dusk we will be riding down the road to gather for the town fireworks, it's always an awesome display.

I LOVE your mowhawk! Maybe you can start a "Ladies Pink Mowhawk Day", start a whole new fashion trend.

Hubby on call this weekend, and I'm sort-of the same, having to log in to work several times, so a long ride was out of the question. Too bad, the weather is great! So, since we're stuck at home, we're smoking a Boston butt - been at it all day. Should be having some tasty (I hope) pulled pork sandwiches sometime tonight.

We had a great time camping! We left Sat. afternoon and got to our spot in the mountains in time to start dinner. We got everything set up, fire going and DH grilled some chicken breasts over the fire. Yum! Then we were all pretty tired and our grandson (2) was really tired, so we all went to bed.

Got up to rain and hail storms! We ate in the camper and played a couple games, listening to the rain on the roof. At times, it was so loud we just sat and looked at each other! Cleared up around 10:30, so we loaded up the poles and went fishing. We got to the creek and just kinda split off, going our own ways. I caught 3 and the girls all caught 1 each. Can't wait to smoke the fish! By the time we got back to the camper, it was a little past lunch, we were all wet and hungry. Ate some sandwiches and then we all took a nap. The clouds cleared up, but it was still pretty chilly. I think there was a high of 62*.

We headed down to the ranch house and on our way, we saw seven elk, cows and calves. They were absolutely beautiful! I haven't seen that many at one time, that close up. Have seen herds (hundreds), but from binos or a scope not just off the road a ways. Got some pics, will post them if they are clear enough.

The "kids" had a ball shooting fireworks, as well as the children!! The men were just giddy!! I think I have raised a bunch of pyros! DH built a fire, probably the coldest 4th of July we have ever had. When we were headed back to our camp, the truck said 48*, but we were in the mountains too.

Came home Monday afternoon, we were kinda dragging our feet to head home. But we sure felt better after a nice hot shower! We had a great time though. Hope to take off again in a couple of weeks. DH's next 4 off we are planning a ride with our girls! Yay!!

A friend of ours has a house in upstate NY - a kind of rustic summer house with lots of bedrooms and places to sleep. So 12 of us rode up there on Saturday morning. We took a verrrrrrrrry long ride there, stopping at a couple of Harley dealers along the way. (One was closed down - Prestige HD in Congers, NY - so depressing to see that For Rent sign up!)

One of the guys that came with us is a fireman who just came off a 12-hour shift. Bad news - he nodded off on one of those great twisty upstate roads and ran off the road  Luckily, he went onto the dirt/grass shoulder and made a soft landing. His arm was scraped up a bit, as was his gas tank (no engine guards). After that, we got him to the house so he could decompress and get some sleep.

On Sunday we spent the whole day riding around, stopping for a late lunch in Oneonta at a great Italian restaurant. Thank God for air conditioning, because it was a very hot day.

On Monday we rode into Cooperstown to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame, then we took the long way home - via Connecticut so we could take the cross-Sound ferry rather than deal with the inevitable traffic going through New York City. It was over 100 degrees!

I hate coming home after a long weekend of riding!

Ended up having a busy 4th weekend.

Had planned on a weekend ride with ex-bf. Thought about riding to the Smokies first, then decided not on a holiday weekend. At 7:30pm Friday 2nd, my brother told me that our brother and SIL were coming in from Colorado and staying with us Sunday, Monday and Tuesday! Originally thought they were driving and staying in their motorhome, instead they flew. Fast house clean, wash extra sheets, etc etc

Finally decided we would take a leisurely ride south to the Ohio River. Ex was going to show up at my house sometime Saturday, change the oil in my bike and then we would leave. Took off about 1:30pm Saturday afternoon. Stopped at French Lick, Indiana. Walked thru West Baden Springs Resort, very cool building and grounds built in the 1920's ? that was popular with the rich and famous, along with gangsters.

Sunday am headed for the river roads. Nice lunch at a favorite spot on river. Came back home on Sunday evening late instead of Monday. :D

Visited with family Sunday night until late, worn out! Monday had more family over for a cook out and visited a lot more. Tuesday afternoon brother and sil left to visit her family and my neice for a couple of weeks then back here sometime before they fly home.

Had a great weekend between riding and family! Just wasn't prepared for all the family stuff along with riding.

I agree. In hindsight, we should have insisted that he not ride under those circumstances. His angel was certainly watching over him that day ...
