Sturgis 2010?

Postby Angelfire36 on Thu Oct 29, 2009 11:12 am

Well, I made our reservations for a motel in Custer, SD. Our plan is to leave on Aug. 8th and camp/motel it on the way out there. We'll stay at the motel (2 nights) and camp (2 nights) in Sturgis, then head home. Hubby didn't want to go during the rally, but it's the only week that's good for us, so here we go! If anyone is planning on going this year, let me know, maybe a possible VTM meet-up? I know it's far off now, but if you plan on getting a room, you will have to reserve now. Gotta save up as much $$$ as possible from now until August! :D

Wow, I didn't know they could change the price on you like that! I'm not sure what we could do about it once we got there. :? If you decided not to stay there, they would probably charge you for late cancellation, what a scam! I guess we'll just have to take our chances. We went to Sturgis in 2001 (from California) and stayed in motels on the way out then, we didn't have a problem with finding rooms, but just in case, we'll have our camping stuff too so if we have to camp we will do so. We will probably camp at least one night anyway to save $$$. In Custer, we will be staying at the Best Western, hopefully, they will be good to us. :| They are supposed to be "biker friendly" and all, with Hog discounts, we will see.....

That would be great! Wyomom, we will probably be staying in Green River on the way out there, but I see that's a couple hundred miles out of your way. Our you planning on going to Sturgis next year?

I want to but Vini thinks it will be crazy. For those who have attended, what was it like?
Thank you for the journey and the reminder that we can trust it, even when we are not sure what comes next.

There are all sorts of people who come to Sturgis. I agree, it is something every biker should do at least once. The atmosphere and energy there is truly amazing. There are really wild and crazy areas and nice quiet areas and everything in between. Trailer people, people who ride there, campers, RVers, motelers, etc. It's all in what your looking for. The roads and scenery are awesome. Sturgis is all about keeping an open mind and having alot of fun. And the journey out there and back is all part of it too. I'm looking forward to going again.

DH says Sturgis is too "bad" for me to go. Especially alone. Not the same as other rally's. Even the cops let things go....
So w/ that said maybe he's right...and I'll stick w/ other more safe/friendly rallys. I do know a guy who went up there on a Honda dual sport but w/ a bunch of Harley guys. I think most women ride on the back over there??

I think the way DH said it was - just make sure your life ins is paid up.

Well, I think maybe the majority of bikes there are probably Harleys, but I did see alot of other makes back in 2001; Hondas, Yamahas, sport bikes, etc.. I also saw a few women riding, which got me really thinking about riding my own. ;) I didn't see anyone catching any flak. But there was this one "lady" in the next campground from us; she was loud and obnoxious and trash-talking our old Ironhead Sportster that we road out there. The worst part was, SHE was riding a Sporty too! So, I started talking loud about how "some people don't have any class", and she shut-up. I think her old man had had enough too, he kept telling her to shut-up, so he might have put her in her place. The next morning, she dumped her bike in the gravel right in front of our campsite. I have heard that Sturgis is nothing like it used to be. I think back in the old days (60s - 70s) it was alot wilder. Sure, you will probably encounter some rough looking characters, but most are just there to have fun, just like everyone else. I just stay out of their way, and go about my own business, no problems. It's only the ignorant people that put down someone elses ride. BTW, our schedule has changed, we will be going the week before Sturgis, arriving 8/2, so I changed our reservations to the Best Western in Deadwood and saved about $60.00 a night!! :D Yay!

I've only been out twice for the actual Sturgis Rally. Camped both times. Never any type of problems.
Don't think I would want to camp alone at Buffalo Chip and maybe a couple of others. Motels ??? don't know of any specific ones that are more "party" motels than others.

Bf wouldn't spend much time downtown Sturgis......it was definantly busy, lots of traffic from downtown out to Buffalo Chip. Each trip we only spent a few hours downtown Sturgis and then went on out by Buffalo Chip and (bar out there, brain fart).

Outside of Sturgis itself we always found things pretty quiet. Yes, people are having lots of fun, just not wild and crazy masses.

Riding :D :D :D some of the best riding in the United States IMO.

Never heard anyone bashing non-Harleys, but I'm sure there is always some a-hole loudmouth that will somewhere. Except my bf giving his best friend some chit about riding his Goldwing. Bf's best friend has always had Harley's but wanted less vibration on his feet so he bought a Goldwing for long trips. A year later this guy decides to go buy another Ultra Classic. Now he has the Goldwing and Ultra.

As a female you may get that as a dumbass "line" from a Harley guy trying to start a conversation with you.

Hey SFW- Your welcome to ride with us, if you would like to go. We'll be going through Nevada on our way out there. Probably will stay in Ely. Let me know.... ;)

If you stay out of the town of Sturgis and either eat a little early or late you can pretty much avoid crowds. (at least major crowds) Places will be busy with motorcyclists, but that is part of the fun, people watching, bike watching along with the riding.

We always stopped by 6pm for dinner or ate a good lunch and just picked up something lite for dinner. Even stopped at a few local places to/from Custer that were not busy at all and had good food/service. One of my favorite places for dinner was Elk Creek Steakhouse. We had to wait maybe 15 minutes one night when we stopped a little later.

Okay, riding to those places take up 3 or 4 day trips from wherever you stay near Sturgis. ;)
That gives you a lot of time just to play, lol. Normally we would make tentative plans for the next day, then wait until morning to see what the weather was doing. If it looked like rain in one direction we headed the other. Worked out really well, only hit a few rain drops one afternoon out of 3 different trips.

BF road thru the Badlands before we met. I've never been able to talk him into riding out into the Badlands when we have gone :(

Well, it is only 600 miles from Mpls, 9 hours or less depending on weather. And don't we go right through some of those scenic spots on the way?

I personally love crowds, craziness, strangers and diversity! I think Vini would love it from a riding and people watching perspective; he is just a lot less comfortable wading right into a scene/conversations etc. than I am.

I WANNA GO!!!

Ahh jealous it's so close! There is something to be said for being in the middle of the country :)

I would love to go to Sturgis! It's something the bf and I have in the works, but not for quite a few years. Get out of school, get a newer bike, etc etc etc.
