BMW Analysis

New Models: Two models join the line-up (as shown in bold green). The K1300S (sport model) and K1300GT (touring model). These replace the K1200 models. The big news is that there is an optional Gear Change Assistant (quick shifter), which allows for a clutchless upshift.

Seat Heights: The charts look a bit strange for 2010, but that is only because BMW has taken the initiative to offer low versions of its seats on many models. I'm still not sure I got them all right though, as the online tech specs seat height call outs are not consistent for model to model.

Weights: This year BMW reported the bike weights as both dry and loaded with fluids, and as we like to know what a bike is going to weigh as we climb on it, you'll see anything in production for 2010 reported with the wet weight.

MSRP Prices: Not much to report here; no increases to small increases checker the chart.

Notes: You may wonder where the F650GS and G650GS models are ... these are classified as dual-purpose (on/off road), which is a category I rarely venture in to. (Update: a letter came in urging me to include the 650s as the reader felt it a great "everyday" bike and very much 90% street vs. off road. That is done now! I'm still not exactly sure on the 2010 MSRP ... that's why there is a ? mark. Note that the cc for the F650GS is NOT a typo ... they changed the engine to the parallel twin in 2009 (literally, the same engine as the F800GS, but detuned) and since then the 2009+ models are referred to as the "650 twin" to denote the different engine.) – Mama

Harley-Davidson Analysis

New Models: Five models join the line-up (as shown in bold green). I'm intrigued by the reintroduction of the Dyna Wide Glide, which was left out in 2009 and now is back, but with a seat height that is 2" lower. Excellent! Otherwise it's mostly about the Electra Glide Ultra Limited with the Twin Cam103 (about 1700 cc) engine. Most powerful of the line-up.

Discontinued Models: The six models in bold red aren't on the factory floor for 2010.

Seat Heights: Ok, so the reintro of the Wide Glide is great at 2" lower but there's a bit of lowering on the Dyna Street Glides as well ... and as we know, even 1/2" can make a difference!

Weights: A few models gained a few pounds and some lost a few ... but nothing to base a reality show on!

Engine CC: Yup ... nothing changed but the addition of the EG Ultra Limited as noted above.

MSRP Prices: Barely a burp ... $1,000 down on the basic Heritage Softail Classic, $700 down on the Softail Deluxe, and $100 up on the Sporty 1200 Low and Nightster. – Mama

Honda Analysis

New Models: It looks like the VTX1300s are on their way out as Honda is announcing its new 1300 Custom Line, which includes the Sabre, Stateline and Interstate. There's also a chopper offering with the Fury. The traditional Shadow line welcomes the Shadow Phantom and the Shadow RS (this last one due at dealers in March 2010). On the sporty-style end of things, we'll be seeing the NT700V and VFR1200F.

Discontinued Models: It's hard to read Honda's intent with the line items in purple ... I didn't show them in red because although Honda's site is showing '09 info ... you'll see small bumps in pricing ... which is definitely 2010. Is this Honda clearing its inventory?! Is the Rebel on it's way out?! It doesn't appear that anything is in place to replace it.

Seat Heights: So, the new 1300 line-up are all showing up at least 1/2" lower, which is always good news for shorter riders. No surprise that the sporty NT700V is sitting high at 31.7" ... sporty styles usually are over 30".

Weights: Not a darn thing to note.

Engine CC: And nothing note-worthy as well.

MSRP Prices: I'm still unclear why '09 models should show bumps from $200 to $1500 if Honda isn't saying, "yes, we're making these in 2010." Equally disconcerting is that a lot of the actual new 2010 models are still priced TBA (To Be Announced). We're only a month away from the new year, unless most of these won't "appear" until early spring. – Mama

Kawasaki Analysis

New Models: The big news is that the Z1000 is back after a hiatus, and it's not your '08 model. Dramatic styling change, all new engine and frame, fuel-injected, suspension changes, new 5-spock cast wheels, and an exhaust update. So, not the line item is not an apple-to-apple comparison ... you'll need to check out Kawi's site page on the Z1000.

Discontinued Models: The website (as of 11/30/09) is not showing a 2010 model for the Eliminator 125, Ninja 500R and Vulcan 500. 2 Monster Energy models are out and the Vulcan 2000 is only coming out in LT fashion.

Seat Heights: A tenth/inch reduction here and there, with the Vulcan 1700 Nomad dropping almost an inch.

Weights: Everything is pretty steady except a pound or two here and there.

Engine CC: Just that Z1000, which went to a new engine and moved from 953cc to 1043cc.

MSRP Prices: All models moving into 2010 have seen a price increase, ranging from $300 to $1300 ... most of that leaping $550-$700. – Mama

 

Ridley Analysis

Dear Readers,
I had noticed that Ridley wasn't showing a 2010 line-up of models, but instead touting it's new certified pre-owned program. I saw an announcement to this affect on the Cyril Huze Blog, which I monitor for the VTM News section. – Mama

Triumph Analysis

New Models: The Rocket line-up has introduced the Rocket III Roadster and the Tiger basic now has an SE version, which "adds an exclusive color scheme and a higher specification that includes our sophisticated ABS system as standard, color matched hardbags and handguards."

Side note ... I lost track of the Thruxton from '08 to '09, but yup, it's still around for 2010. The Thunderbird was new somewhere in the middle of '09, so that line item is now showing for both '09 and '10.

Discontinued Models: The base Rocket III and Rocket III Classic are not showing up in the 2010 line-up.

Seat Heights: Aha ... take a look at the much loved Bonneville ... just keep going lower!

Weights: Thank goodness ... Triumph is now reporting bike weight as wet/curb ... which is what we ride ... with fluids! I never did understand why mfgs. reported the dry weight specs as what does that matter?!

Engine CC: All quiet.

MSRP Prices: 10 models remain unchanged, while the other 8 increased by $100-$400 max. – Mama

New Models: The big news is the two new touring bikes ... the Cross Country and the Cross Roads. Visit the site to read more about what these models have to offer.

Discontinued Models: The four models in bold red aren't on the factory floor for 2010. But please note that models like the Kingpin Low now show that lower seat height in the Kingpin 8-Ball ... same for the Vegas Low, you'll see Vegas and Vegas 8-Ball with the lower seat height.

Seat Heights: As noted, the "Lows" simply had their seat heights incorporated into existing models. The big news is the Vision 8-Ball cruiser ... 24.5" is low, low, low! 

Weights: All the models from 2009 that continue in 2010 have gained three pounds ... a bit of age creep?!?!

Engine CC: Everything is in line with last year

MSRP Prices: Several models remain unchanged, a few gained a few hundred dollars, but the standard Hammer and Vision Tour both took a larger leap (making '09 models something to check into). – Mama

New Models: Hmmmm ... well, that sporty YZF-RI LE is actually "a limited edition Valentino Rossi / Fiat Yamaha replica complete with the number “46” and “The Doctor” logos, including a replica of Valentino Rossi’s signature on the fuel tank." Since there are folks out there who care about these things, I of course, duly note it. 

On the cruiser side of things, did the Stratoliner Midnight ('08), which became the Stratoliner ('09), now morph into the "new" Strartoliner Deluxe ('10)? I'm thinking not quite as there is an $1800 price difference which amounts to something than just a new year tag. Discontinued Models: The Yami chart is bleeding but if you look more closely, a lot of models offered two very similar names, and one got axed off the list. Of course we've lost the whole 1063cc range in favor of a leap from 647cc (Classis, Custom, Silverado) to 942cc (V Star 950) and then a couple of offerings around 1300cc. Ah, I suppose the much loved 1100s were a pesky lot!

Engine CC: Everything is in line with last year

MSRP Prices: In the song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas," I believe there were 10 Lords a-Leaping... Yami has 21 motorcycle prices a-jumpin' .... ok, kinda of lame, but specifications can get rather dry. Most of it's that $200-$500 increase. A few notable exceptions are the Royal Star Venture S and the VMAX (around $1500). – Mama
